Electric vehicles are quiet, fast and futuristic. They’ve come a long way since the original Tesla Roadster and other early electric vehicles. Sometimes these benefits come with high maintenance and repair costs. Costs are usually low for the first few years but increase in the fourth and fifth years. Driving the latest technology doesn’t always come cheap. After five years of maintenance costs for the 2020 Tesla Model S, your wallet will be about $10,000 lighter. While that sounds like a lot, a study found that EV drivers spend up to 60% less on fuel.
What is the reason for that? If you think it’s the batteries, you’re only partially right. Car parts wear out due to the weight of the electric vehicle. All that wiring and numerous batteries put a lot of stress on the tires, suspension and brakes. The tires wear out faster, and the suspension, along with the brakes, also takes the brunt of the extra gravity. That doesn’t mean EVs can’t be reliable, they just have different costs. The US Department of Energy estimates that electric vehicle batteries last between 12 and 15 years under the right conditions. They believe EV batteries can last at least 8 years even in less than ideal climates.
