The Safest Electric Cars In The World Right Now

Electric cars tend to be just as safe or safer than internal combustion engine vehicles, and even the IIHS President agrees.

Modern electric cars are very safe. The IIHS president says they are seeing more evidence that electric vehicles are as safe or safer than internal combustion engine vehicles. Since its inception in 1959, the IIHS has a long history of issuing safety ratings.

In 2022, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) chose 101 vehicles as its top safety picks. In 2021 there were just 90 picks. Vehicles must pass a variety of crash tests and other assessments. Front, driver and passenger crash tests are just a few parts of the IIHS evaluation. In the side crash test, a 3,000-pound driverless vehicle crashes into test cars. You can watch a 2021 Mazda CX-5 goes through the side test in this IIHS video. They measure the structural performance of the vehicles as well as the injuries and movements of the dummy.

The IIHS uses different ratings for different areas of vehicles. We will refer to these reviews a few times in this article.

– Good (the highest rating), Acceptable, Marginal and Poor (the lowest rating).

Other areas are classified as Superior, Advanced and Basic. In order to be rated a Top Safety Pick + instead of a Top Safety Pick, there is one important requirement. The vehicle must have good or acceptable headlights as a standard option. Most of the vehicles on this list achieved the coveted Top Safety Pick + rating.

The rear seats have seat belt anchorages that are deep in the seat, hence an Acceptable rating. It’s an impressive result from Tesla.
